Recap: Step 1 - Prioritize Critical Positions

This step establishes a clear and intentional foundation for succession planning. Your Succession Planning Committee is now in place, with a list of potential evaluation metrics, shared expectations around confidentiality, inclusion, and appropriate participation. The committee has inventoried all positions in the department and evaluated each role based on vulnerability to vacancy and criticality to the organization’s mission.

By completing Step 1, your organization now has:

  • A Succession Planning Committee with a shared understanding of roles, responsibilities, and what succession planning entails

  • A list of potential metrics to evaluate the plan over time

  • A complete inventory of departmental positions

  • A risk-ranked list of positions

  • A short list and tracking sheet of high-risk roles ready for deeper succession planning work

These prioritized positions will move forward into Step 2, where the focus shifts from which roles matter most to what those roles require in terms of knowledge, skills, responsibilities, and readiness.
